Australian Football League (AFL)

Australian Football League, also known as ‘Aussie Rules’, was formed in Victoria in 1857.

The game was developed by T. Wills, H.C.A. Harrison, W.J. Hammersley and J.B. Thompson to provide a winter sport between Rugby and Cricket seasons to maintain fitness.

The first match occurred in 1958 between two prominent boys’ schools in Melbourne, Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar. The sport became official in 1869 and the League was established.

Currently there are 17 clubs which represent districts throughout Victoria and other states. They play 22 rounds of 176 matches a year mainly on weekends.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is the home of the AFL, but matches are played at many sport stadiums throughout Victoria and Australia.

Hawthorn Football Club is one of the 17 professional Australian rules football teams. 

It is the most succesful team in the mdoern era having won a premiership in each of the last five decades.

The Club has a new home at Stadium Park, Waverley, which is the old Waverley Park Stadium, home to many big games of AFL over the year 70s, 80s and 90s.

Rootvij Kadakia Foundation was formed in memory of Rootvij Kdaakia who passed away in at Lake Tyers beach near Lakes Entrance in Victoria trying to help his friend who was caught in a rip. 

The primary aim of the Foundation is to raise beach safety awareness amongst the community.  Australia is blessed with one of the most beautiful coastlines and very beautiful beaches. However, like many other things, one needs to be careful and responsible when at the beach to ensure a safe and fun-filled time.

The Foundation via its Read The Beach campaign helps conduct programs that educate the participants on various aspects of beach and water safety. The Foundation is a not for profit organization.

International Student Legal Advice Clinic (ISLAC)

ISLAC provides free legal services to international students in Victoria. Students with a legal question or who face legal issues can get assistance at one of three clinics across Melbourne. These are staffed by lawyers, registered migration agents and paralegals- many of whom are or were once international students. ISLAC also provides community legal education that teaches students about how to avoid legal problems. ISLAC understands international students face difficulties accessing justice and are vulnerable to being marginalized and exploited. ISLAC is dedicated to serving this community to remedy this.
